THE COMPETITION

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the largest international law competition in the world.

Organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA), the competition simulates a trial before the International Court of Justice, the main judicial body of the United Nations (UN).

Renowned as the most prestigious law competition, Jessup currently brings together participants from all over the world: in 2018, more than 3,000 students from 680 universities across 100 countries and jurisdictions competed.

Why participate?

There are numerous benefits for students who participate in the competition. Jessup requires students to master the areas of research, writing and oral presentation (all in English), providing notable personal and professional growth.

Teamwork is essential when preparing for the competition, helping students learn to live together, communicate and organize themselves.

Jessup is also great for your CV. Foreign universities and international companies value participation in the competition!

Lesley Benn

Former Executive Director of the International Law Students Association

"[...] with the quality of the teams we have seen at the international rounds in recent years, it is also the case that we should expect to see continued impressive achievements from the Brazilian team's coming to the international rounds. Within the next 5 years I believe we should expect to see a team from Brazil make it all the way to the world championship final round. […] there is not any other country that has demonstrated the dedication to and the love for the Jessup that Brazil has. "

Senior Counsel at Canada's Trade Law Bureau (JLT)

"Jessup competitors get to meet other students, lawyers, judges and professors all of whom are passionate for international law and all of whom are passionate for becoming better lawyers and better people. The Jessup gives you the opportunity to do far more work and far more exposure to other people in the world that any other class you would take in law school. Yes, it is hard work, but it is fun work."

"In my personal opinion, the Jessup has been crucial to me. In that, it helped me to enhance my legal research and writing abilities, as well as my public speaking skills, all of which are important in the work of a legal practitioner. Furthermore, it is a wonderful place to meet people from literally all around the world, with whom to be able to share your experiences and ideas." [Jessup] is recognized by leading law firms as proving one's commitment and ability and could well be a stepping stone towards a successful carrier at a prestigious international organization, within the government or in the private sector."

Studying Advanced Master in Public International Law at Leiden University

“If today I can say that I have found an area of law that truly interests me, that I can truly look at with passion, it is precisely because of Jessup. Jessup […] is a unique opportunity that you have during your undergraduate studies to be able to work on skills that, in a way, are very little touched upon – or almost not touched at all – in the undergraduate course and also, even less so, in internships. [...] Remember that the moot court is not a place where you will learn specific cases that will be important for your life in the future, but a place where you will develop the skills necessary to take new heights.”

“This network, this networking, makes all the difference, and it is a networking that you will only achieve by participating in moot courts. [...] It is an experience that is worth adding to your resume. Large firms have been guided by experience in moot courts. [...] Participate, be active, go after it, don't give up and keep moving forward. It is an experience that changes people."

Attorney

"I chose Jessup because, in my opinion, it is an extraordinary experience in the sense of going beyond the ordinary. I think everyone is subject to the same class time as each other, to the same professors, and what you do outside of college is what will set you apart from your peers."
