Welcome, dear FoJs and Future FoJs, to this new season of the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition!
With registrations now open and the Jessup Problem so close to being released that we can already feel its signs, we are all anxiously awaiting what is to come. We know little about the case, as always, but we have an idea of the main themes that will guide the case:
the rights and obligations of other members of the international community when two persons claim to be the legitimate president of a state;
invocation of immunity for government officials accused of serious violations of human rights;
the legal consequences of receding coastlines for the maritime zones of coastal states; and
the interpretation of the commitment clause in a treaty creating a regional organization.
It is always important to remember that it is essential to have the basics up to date, which is why we always repeat: STUDY BASIC PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL LAW!
TIPS:
Memorials
On the ILSA website in Jessup Archives, you will find, in addition to the cases and teams awarded that year, the Best Memorials. Use them as a guide, both for organizing the structure of the memorial (always keeping an eye on the Official Rules), and how you choose to treat the argumentation structure, the best arguments and how you use footnotes.
REMINDER : Since 2024, ILSA has released, together with the rules, the Official Abbreviations that can be used. Breaking this rule implies a penalty. Be aware!
Oral Rounds
The judges section, also on the ILSA website, has several guidelines for new judges and materials that are used during the rounds. Why not take advantage and read them? Find out what the judges will be expecting from the oral argument, basic DIP questions, questions that guide various cases, elements that the speakers will be evaluated on... It's all there. Enjoy it without moderation and incorporate it into your team's training for the national and international rounds.
Don't forget to read the OFFICIAL RULES to understand how the competition works. On the ILSA website (that's exactly it, everything is there) in JESSUP FAQs it may be of great use to you too.
If you have any questions, guess what, send an email to jessup@ilsa.org or braziljessup@gmail.com .
We are at your disposal.
SPREAD THE WORD, THE 2025 JESSUP BRAZIL IS COMING!
Jessup Brazil is on the move. We already have a location set. Can you guess?
